Job Description
The Sr. Project Manager is responsible for planning, leading, organizing, and motivating agile project teams to achieve a high level of performance and quality in delivering agile projects. The Sr. Project Manager has overall responsibility for planning, directing, coordinating and delivering activities pertaining to technology and business solutions. This requires ensuring project objectives are accomplished and aligned with business goals and priorities; managing the project team to include various internal departments as well as external vendors and customers.
The ideal candidate will possess strong project management and technical skills and hands-on software application experience. Experience in the travel industry and airline revenue management or ancillary services is a plus. The Sr. Project Manager will manage several concurrent high visibility projects, using agile methods, in a fast-paced environment. In performing that role, the Sr. Project Manager will be expected to use a high level of knowledge and experience in blending traditional project management principles and practices with an Agile development approach in the right proportions to fit large, complex projects ensuring the right balance of agility and predictability.
- Demonstrates leadership, guidance, and versatility to support project team members and department heads to meet the business objectives.
- Proven expertise and competency in assessing and identifying project risks, mitigating threats and capitalizing on opportunities.
- Ability to remove ambiguity in roles and responsibilities by clearly mapping out activities against expected outcomes relative to time. Identifies the interdependencies between deliverables and functional teams.
- Expert understanding of the process and tools required to manage the scope of work relative to the outcomes identified in the business case. Understands the metrics and the process for achieving those metrics/goals.
- Expert ability in cultivating an open and trusting environment to enable a successful delivery.
- Expert ability to work collaboratively in iterative and incremental agile software development framework for managing software projects and product or application development.
- Possesses excellent communication skills in order to effectively engage the project team and provide updates to senior management on project status, risk evaluation and problem resolution.
- Serves as the liaison between the project team, senior management, vendors and customers to ensure overall project success.
Project Management - Manage all aspects of assigned project while focusing on regular and timely delivery of value; organize and lead project status and working meetings; prepare and distribute progress reports; manage risks and issues; correct deviations from plans; and perform planning for assigned projects
Communication - Establish and manage effective communication channels with the project team, key stakeholders, project sponsor and senior management to enhance project purpose, knowledge and understanding.
Resource Management - Assist in team development while holding teams accountable for their commitments, removing roadblocks to their work; leveraging organizational resources to improve capacity for project work; and mentoring and developing team members
Process Management and Improvement - Define and manage a well-defined project management process and champion ongoing process improvement initiatives to implement best practices for Agile Project Management
Reporting – Provide relevant project status report on a regular basis to Project Portfolio and others as needed in order to track project progress and risk actualization including presentations to the Business Steering Committee.
Team building - promote empowerment of the team, ensure that each team member is fully engaged in the project and making a meaningful contribution, and encourage a sustainable pace with high-levels of quality for the team
Job Requirements
- Requires 6-8 years Project Management with Agile methodology experience, managing complex technical projects.
- Travel industry experience a plus.
- Technical experience in software engineering or computer science is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with a team.
- Good Presentation skills.
- Must have good communication skills and be effective in working with product teams, software teams, and Sr. Management.
- Must have working functional knowledge of business software applications (MS Office, MS Project, MS Excel, etc.).
- Deep understanding of technical concepts, project concepts and both Agile and Waterfall development methodologies.
- Ability to multi-task and handle multiple projects and priorities.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent team motivation, negotiation and delegation skills.
- Candidate must be goal-oriented and results-driven; pragmatic and self-disciplined.
- Must have strong business acumen. Contract and business case experience a plus.
- Experience with PPM tools such as Compuware ChangePoint and Agile project management tools such as tool such as Rally is a plus.
- B.S./B.A. in Project Management/Business/Information Technology or other related discipline required.
- MS/MBA preferred.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification required.
- PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)-Preferred.
- PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)-Preferred.
- At least one current technical certification- desired.
- Six Sigma certification a plus. May include occasional travel to vendor sites, conferences, customer visits, etc.
- 10-25% travel.
