Senior Software Engineer SQL Optimizer Team, Server Platform

Vertica, an HP company, seeks Software Engineers in Cambridge, MA to design and develop database query optimization algorithms for a commercially successful, high performance massively parallel distributed system.

This is a rare opportunity to own parts of the core database engine that handles terabytes of user data and is on the leading edge of large scale data analytics. You will work on the component that plans every query processed by the Vertica Analytic Database and have the potential to make a large impact on our business.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop and implement techniques and optimizations to improve plan run times.
• Design, develop and implement new SQL functionality.
• Research and identify applicable state-of-the-art algorithms and techniques in databases, analyze their applicability, and perform cost-benefit analysis.
• Gather and determine requirements for new features.
• Develop and document intellectual property.

Qualifications

Education and/or Training:

• Masters degree, or equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or related academic field.
• PhD, or equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or related academic field.
• Bachelors degree, or equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field plus several years of progressive experience in a similar position.

Knowledge and Experience (required):

• Ability to deliver prodigious amounts of extremely high quality code (get stuff done).
• Data structures.
• Complexity analysis and improvement of algorithms.
• SQL, C/C++, high performance, multi-threading.

Knowledge and Experience (bonus):

• Database internals
• Distributed query optimization algorithms
