The major function is to supply clean linens and garments to the facilities in VISN 1 laundry services.  The incumbent is to process soiled linens, clothing and uniforms throughout industrial type washer/extractors and produce odorless hygienically clean linens for the VA Medical Centers.
The incumbent will operate all wash/extractors 800 lbs. 400 lbs. and 85 lbs capacities, and 110 lbs. and 400 lbs capacity dryers.  Also operates ancillary equipment such as conveyors, scales, lifts, and computerized soil sort system, monorails and water recovery systems such as waste and recovery systems.  Loads washer/extractors by sling, with the exception of the 85 lb. capacity, which is loaded by hand.  Also unloads washer/extractors by hand into slings, which are lifted by monorail system to await drying.  He/She checks chemical supplies frequently throughout the day, so the computerized chemical injection system will not run dry, and changes the chemicals when it is necessary. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm

EXPERIENCE:  Evidence of experience which demonstrates you possess the job elements to perform the duties of this position, must be supported by detailed description of your experience on your resume or OF-612.

Job Elements:

APPLICANTS WILL BE EVALUATED ON THE DEGREE TO WHICH THEY DEMONSTRATE POSSESSION OF THE FOLLOWING JOB ELEMENTS:

 

PHYSICAL EFFORT:  Work requires long periods of standing on hard surfaces.  Exerts strong physical effort in removing wet and hot linen from washer/extractors.  Lifts bags of dirty linen from sani-trux weighing 35 to 50 pounds.  Physical effort if required in pushing of carts of soiled laundry and sorting of soiled linens.  Then incumbent must be physically able to load sani-trux onto trailer, some of these sani-trux weigh up to six hundred (600) pounds and there may be as many as fifteen (15) sani-trux to be loaded on a 24-foot truck.  Effort is required to maneuver vehicle in heavy traffic and perform proper backing up procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed in a noisy, hot, humid, drafty and dusty (lint) laundry plant.  The plant is subject to rapid changes in temperature during the winter months.  Incumbent must use universal precautions while handling soiled linen in a biohazard area.  Required to wear vinyl gloves, latex gloves, masks, caps and isolation gowns.  Attire can be very uncomfortable and hot; particularly in the summer months.  Subject to skin irritation from chemicals.  Subject to slips and falls due to damp or wet floors.  Subject to the normal road hazards while driving.
