The Nursing Service Line has 2 full-time vacancies for a GS-05 Psychiatric Nursing Assistant on 7 upper.  The psychiatric nursing assistant performs a wide range of nursing care activities.  In addition to performing personal care, treatments, recording, and support duties, also encourages involvement by the patient in his/her individual treatment plan.  Independently leads scheduled activities of daily living groups, reality orientation and socialization.  Duties include assisting patients with activities of daily-living, diagnostic procedures, treatments, charting, and patient and family education.  Duties include basic health care, escorting patients to appointments and off station, recognizing and reporting symptoms that may indicate escalation of behaviors, recording patient information in the medical record, providing direction, information and limit setting in accordance with the patient’s treatment plan.  Other duties include maintaining a clean and safe environment, using standard precautions and using equipment according to policy and procedures, attending to patient needs during acute episodes, and recognizing acute episodes. The following duties are identified:

 

o  Initiate activity groups

o  Supports the plan of care for the patient.

o  Precepts new NA.

o  Identifies behavior that is problematic.

o  Initiates a psychiatric intervention.

o  Participates in the Psychiatric Intervention Team following the non-violent crisis intervention guidelines.

o  Escorts high psychiatric patients as indicated.

o  Provides Special one to one.

o  Provides basic physical care to keep the patient clean and dry.

o  Knows the location of the patients assigned.

o  Writes daily note on identified patients.

o  Assists the physician or NP/PA with procedures.

o  Initiates CPR, procure equipment, and/or assist in transporting a patient during a medical emergency.

o  Supports and participate ill performance Improvement activities.

o  Participates in searches of a person for contraband or items that are identified as unsafe according to unit-based policy.

o  Searches for patients as required.   .

o  Provides nourishment and fluids to patients between meals following established Guidelines.

o  Supervises and assists patients with ADLs as necessary.

o  Takes vital signs, pain scale evaluation.

o  Develops computer/keyboarding skills.

o  Follows appropriate guidelines when using non-behavioral and behavioral restraints.

o  Participates in unit-based committee work as assigned.

o  Patient and family education. 

o  Duties include basic health care, escorting patients to appointments and off station, recognizing and reporting symptoms that may indicate escalation of behaviors, recording patient information in the medical record, providing direction, information and limit setting in accordance with the patient’s treatment plan.

o  Other duties include maintaining a clean and safe environment, using standard precautions and using equipment according to policy and procedures, attending to patient needs during acute episodes, and recognizing acute episodes. 

 

Hours are : Shifts will be determined at time of hire, however the PNA is able to rotate to all tours of duty, weekends and holidays and may be reassigned to other nursing areas to meet patient needs. When necessary the PNA may be required to work overtime.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. 
  •  English language proficiency - must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:


 

Requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) OR successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelors degree with courses related to the occupation OR equivalent combinations of successfully completed related post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. A transcript or course listing must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

 

Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties, such as:

·  Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.

·  Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating reusable medical equipment and apparatus.

·  Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.

·  Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

·  preferred previous psychiatric nursing assistant experience

Physical Requirements: Working with patients requires regular and recurring Standing, Bending, stooping, lifting, sitting, and walking and may be exposed to situations that require intervention.
