Lead Security Guard at Natick

JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:

The U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center (SSC) is the Armys one-stop Soldier-support organization. SSC is responsible for researching, developing, fielding and managing food, clothing, shelters, airdrop systems and Soldier support items. The U.S. Army Garrison-Natick provides installation capabilities and services to support mission readiness and execution, and to enhance the quality of life of Natick soldiers, civilian employees and family members.

We are conveniently located on the shores of Lake Cochituate, in Natick, MA, (a suburb of Boston, near Routes 9, 90, 95 and 495). Parking is free and access to site facilities is available to include an on-site federal credit union, recreational facilities (swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts), barbershop, dining facility, and post-exchange store.

You will serve as a Lead Security Guard and will perform the following duties:

  • Assign duty posts and patrols along with instructions on security techniques to assigned guards
  • Provide on-the-job training in security techniques to new employees
  • Maintain discipline, courtesy and appearance standards among assigned guards on duty
  • Maintain radio logs and prepare and submit daily blotter reports
  • Perform security guard access control and patrol duties to detect and prevent theft, damage, accident, trespass, sabotage and espionage to the installation
  • Control access of vehicles and pedestrians to installation
  • Verify ID through use of ID cards, badges, biometrics automated records, and vehicle decals
  • Confiscate unauthorized items in accordance with security guard regulations

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.  Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.  Specialized experience is defined as:  Work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis.  This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition. Civilian personnel of the Department of the Defense are not exempt from this provision. This includes Protection from Abuse Orders.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • SKILL IN LEADING OTHERS
  • ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE ORALLY

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the GS-04 grade (or equivalent).


Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • Requires the ability to wear chemical protection equipment, as required.
  • May require exposure to inclement weather.
